THE RENAISSANCE
In 1453, Constantinople fell to the Turks and many of the Greek scholars who lived in the city fled to Italy. They brought with them the literature and culture of ancient Greece with it's knowledge of the arts and sciences which ad previously been almost unknown in western Europe. This new influx of knowledge led to the renaissance which began in Italy and Renaissance, or humanism, was somewhat different from that of the Renaissance in Italy, where interest was focused mainly on ancient Greek pagan mythology and poetry.
English scholars gave greater attention to the study of the testaments and access to texts in the original language brought to light the differences between the dogma of the Roman Catholic Church and the actual teachings of Christ. The call for a reform of the church and corrupt partices of the clergy gained further momentum.
The two most important centres of humanist learning were the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and the greatest English humanist scholar, Sir Thomas More, whose work utopia described an ideal imaginary country where society was based on the principles of freedom and equality.
